Quick answer
Yes, on most days you spend time outside in daylight. Average midday UV in November is about 6 in Karachi, 5 in Islamabad and 4 in Lahore. The World Health Organization recommends sun protection from a UV index of 3.1 Smog can block some sunlight, but not in a way you can see or count on. If you are treating dark spots or melasma, winter is not a break from sunscreen.
Many people put sunscreen away in winter. The weather feels mild, the sky looks grey, and sunscreen can feel heavy on dry skin. This guide looks at what winter sunlight really looks like in Pakistani cities, what smog does and does not change, and how to fit sunscreen into a dry-weather routine. For reapplying during the day, see our working-day reapplication guide; we do not repeat it here.
Winter UV in Pakistani cities
| City | November | December | January | Peak month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Karachi | 6 | 5 | 6 | 12 (April to August) |
| Islamabad | 5 | 4 | 4 | 8 (May to July) |
| Lahore | 4 | 3 | 3 | 12 (June and July) |
Average monthly UV index from Weather Atlas climate data for Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore, checked 27 October 2026. These are long-term averages for the middle of the day, not a forecast. Clear days are higher.
Winter UV is much lower than summer, which is why the summer rules feel excessive in December. But WHO says protective measures are recommended from a UV index of 3, and advises seeking shade at midday from 3 to 7.1 Karachi stays above that line all winter, and Lahore and Islamabad sit on or above it around midday. Temperature tells you nothing about UV: a cold, bright day can still reach these levels.
Does smog block UV?
Partly, and unpredictably. Haze and smoke scatter and absorb some sunlight, so UV is often lower on heavy smog days. How much lower changes from day to day, and nobody can judge it by looking at the sky. We found no good measurements for Lahore’s winter smog specifically.
Clouds are a useful comparison. The American Academy of Dermatology says up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays can get through clouds,2 and WHO notes that UV can be high even under cloud cover.3 So treat a grey smog day as “probably lower, not zero”. On smog days, sunscreen also belongs in a wider routine of proper cleansing and antioxidant care. Our smog-season guide covers that.
Why dark spots and melasma need sunscreen in winter
This is where winter sunscreen matters most for many Pakistani readers. In a study of people with darker skin types (IV to VI), both long-wave UVA and visible light caused pigmentation, and the pigment from visible light was darker and lasted longer. Lighter skin (type II) did not pigment in the same test.4 UVA and visible light do not disappear in winter, and UVA also passes through window glass.2
If you are treating melasma, the AAD recommends broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, applied throughout the day, and lists iron oxide among the useful sunscreen ingredients. It also suggests a tinted sunscreen if a white cast puts you off.5 Iron oxides are what give tinted sunscreens and many foundations their colour.
An honest note about our product: the Floreva Hybrid Sunscreen is not tinted, and its listing makes no visible-light claim. If you have melasma, ask your dermatologist whether to add a tinted, iron-oxide product such as a tinted base or foundation on top. Stopping sunscreen in winter can undo the work of brightening treatments like our Advanced Brightening Cream. Our melasma guide has the full picture.
Winter trips: snow and altitude
Winter is the season for Murree, Nathia Gali, Malam Jabba, Naran or Skardu. Two things raise UV on those trips. WHO notes that fresh snow reflects UV and increases your exposure, and that UV rises with altitude because thinner air absorbs less of it.3 So a bright day in the snow can expose you to more UV than a winter day in the city.
- Apply sunscreen to the face, neck, ears and the backs of your hands before heading out.
- Reapply during long days outdoors, and after wiping your face or sweating.
- Wear sunglasses: snow glare is hard on the eyes too.
- Use a lip balm with SPF if you have one. Lips burn and crack easily in cold, bright air.
Weddings and outdoor daytime functions
Winter is also shaadi season, with many daytime events held outdoors: mehndi lunches, walima afternoons, family photos on the lawn. Apply sunscreen as the last skincare step, give it a few minutes to settle, then apply makeup. If you will be outside for hours, plan a touch-up. Our reapplication guide covers how to do that over makeup.
Sunscreen on dry winter skin
Winter dryness is the most common reason people stop. A few changes usually fix it:
- Order: cleanse gently, apply serum if you use one, then moisturiser, then sunscreen last.
- Let each layer settle for a minute or two. Rubbing sunscreen into wet moisturiser is the main cause of pilling.
- Use a richer moisturiser underneath instead of skipping sunscreen. Our winter routine explains how to choose one.
- Use a gentle face wash. A harsh wash makes dry skin feel worse under every product. Our guide to face wash for dry and sensitive skin can help.
When can you reasonably skip it?
On a day spent fully indoors away from windows, or if you only go out after dark, you are getting very little UV. That is a fair reason to skip it. A short walk to the car, a seat by a sunny window or a midday errand is still daylight exposure. If you are treating pigmentation, keeping the habit daily is simpler than deciding each morning.
Where Floreva fits
We sell the Floreva Hybrid Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++++, currently Rs.1,249. It combines zinc oxide and titanium dioxide with Tinosorb S, a modern UV filter, and its listing includes niacinamide, vitamin E, aloe vera and panthenol. It is not tinted, and the listing makes no water-resistance claim. Our hybrid sunscreen label guide explains what those terms mean, and our sunscreen buying guide compares options.
Frequently asked questions
Kya sardiyon mein sunscreen lagana zaroori hai?
Ji haan, agar aap din mein bahar jaate hain. November mein Karachi mein UV index average 6, Islamabad mein 5 aur Lahore mein 4 hota hai, aur WHO 3 se upar hifazat ka mashwara deta hai. Agar aap daghon ya melasma ka ilaj kar rahe hain to sardiyon mein bhi rozana sunscreen lagayein.
Sardi mein sunscreen se skin dry kyun lagti hai?
Aksar masla sunscreen nahi, balki neeche moisturiser ki kami ya sakht face wash hota hai. Pehle gentle face wash, phir achha moisturiser, ek do minute ruk kar sunscreen. Is se patri (pilling) bhi kam hoti hai.
Does smog block UV rays?
Some, but not reliably. Haze and smoke scatter part of the sunlight, but the effect changes daily and cannot be judged by eye. Treat a smoggy day as lower UV, not as no UV.
Is SPF 30 enough in winter?
The AAD recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher all year.2 A higher SPF does not replace using enough product or reapplying when you are outdoors for long periods.
Do I need sunscreen indoors in winter?
If you sit near a window, consider it: UVA passes through window glass.2 In a room away from daylight, your exposure is low.
Can I stop sunscreen in winter if I am using a brightening cream?
We would not. Brightening ingredients work slowly, and sunlight keeps triggering pigment. Daily sunscreen protects the progress you make.
